Mad Metal Chain on the Cheap

In video episode number 4, Victoria brought us on a virtual shopping trip to Metalliferous. Along with some cool tools, she showed us the yards and yards of chain you can bug there by the foot. I love working with chain. It's a super easy way to make jewelry, and today, the whole "link look" is really popular.

If you've been thinking of branching out into chain but aren't ready to make a huge investment yet, one option is your local craft store. You'd be amazed at how many jewelry making goodies most of them have these days. I finally have a Michael'scraft store in my area, a mere 10 minutes down the road (whoot!). In the past it was a 30 to 40 minute drive for me :(

So, I was there for the store's grand opening, and among the many other items I purchases so I could get the free tote bag - yes, I had to have it! - I picked up some super cheap chain to play with. Above is just a bunch of different sizes and textures of jump rings, 30 in all. I think it was about three dollars. I could see making these into fun hoop earrings or attaching them to different parts of a bead and wire or bead strung necklace.

Here is some large link chain I also bought there, again about three bucks, and it's about three feet long. You could literally add a clasp to one end, and voila! But I'm thinking of adding some items to dangle here and there. We'll see...still thinking about it.

I really like the new metal stuff at Michael's and I love the new linky trend in jewelry. At my local Michael's some of the chain packs were 2 for $5.00 so I picked up a few to make something! I would love to see what you make out of yours!

Yup, I made the long one into just a striaght necklace. I think it's great that they have such a good chain selection and at great prices.
