POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, SEPTEMBER 14 2007 09:00 AM | PERMALINK

Jean Yates, author of a ja-zillion articles from a slew of jewelry making magazines and avid blogger at Snap Out of it Jean! There's Beading to Be Done! has created her own little - but growing - chain maille gallery. Pictured above is one piece from her gallery.

But, she didn't stop there. In fact, she's got a new book coming out in Janurary called Links: Inspired Bead and Wire Jewelry Creations, published by Northern Lights. It's available right now for early ordering at Amazon.com:

  • ReVamp!

POSTED BY VICTORIA TILLOTSON, SEPTEMBER 10 2007 12:00 PM | PERMALINK

Makeovers…who doesn’t love them? Our culture is obsessed…and so is Metalchik! I love to take something old and make it new. It’s like keeping the old soul and adding a cool new body.

While everyone likes a beautiful piece of antique jewelry, some old jewelry is just plain yucky. For those of you MY age (not telling!), the most dreaded piece of jewelry might be the stickpin. Wow, what DO you do with that? Well, while I’m still puzzling over that one, I’ll share my thought about other neat-o revamps you...

  • Inside Scoop on Wire Projects

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, SEPTEMBER 10 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

I think the saying "it's not what you know - it's who you know" fits in here some how because I recently got the inside scoop about some free new Colourcraft wire projects created by Margot Potter for the Beadalon website, which is being updated as we speak. Casual browsers of the site would not find these that easily because of the under construction stuff going on, but I have some direct links for you, thanks to Margot, to some fast and fun wire project:

  • Favorite Wire Gauge

During a wire wrapping classes I took a few years ago at my local rock and gem club, I remember hearing one of the students mention how much she preferred using 21-gauge wire over just about any other size. At the time, I thought, "What's the diff? Can 20 and 22 be that different than 21-gauge wire?"

Eventually, curious about her wire rantings, I bought some 21-gauge, and I saw the light. Here's was so great about this odd sized wire:

  • Metal Clay is Cool

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, SEPTEMBER 04 2007 12:50 PM | PERMALINK

When metal clay first came out, I was curious enough to take a few classes. My biggest beef about it, though, was the fact that back then you needed to use a kiln for the burnout process. I do have a kiln, but I had always used it for fused glass, and with glass, I had never needed a pryometer, so I didn't get one when I bought the kiln. But, I soon learned the hard way that with clay, the pyrometer was mega important, unless, of course, you enjoy spending time forming your metal clay creations...

  • How To Make A Roman Chain

POSTED BY VICTORIA TILLOTSON, SEPTEMBER 03 2007 12:00 PM | PERMALINK

I love to make chains! There is something soothing about the repetitious work. I guess it’s sort of like knitting, something that I can’t do at all! ☺ Learning how to make a chain is great because once you to it, you understand it and can decide when to buy them and when to take the time to make them yourself. There are some pre-made chains I would never bother to make because to get them that perfect is not a good use of anyone’s time. Leave it to the professionals! But you can’t get the look and feel of...
