  • China 4 Jewelry Lovers

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, NOVEMBER 08 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

These bead and chain lovelies are from Candie Cooper, aka the Savvy Crafter, who is currently living in China right now enjoying the sites, sounds, and jewelry goodies. If you are new to her blog, then find some time to stop by and catch up. She often shows and tells about her various excursions.

The recent trip that inspired her to design these earrings included a stop at a bead vendor building filled with beads (she's got some excellent photos of this....drool city, baby) followed by a gem and...

  • Colorful Jewelry Choices

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, OCTOBER 16 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

One resource for keeping up with color trends is the color forecast published on the Fire Moutain Gems and Beads web site. Their current forecast goes up to...

  • Beads Change Lives

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, OCTOBER 09 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

Many of us already know that the pleasure we find beading and making jewelry brings us a lot of self-confidence, but it probably isn't something you really think about on a day to day basis until you hear a story like this from the blog, A Little Something, which documents the beading experience of a small group of female refugees now living in the US. This is an excerpt from an essay, entitled "Eight Dollars," which you'll find on the blog. It's written by Sharon McCreary, who works with this...

  • Beading 101...and some beaded works of art!

POSTED BY VICTORIA TILLOTSON, OCTOBER 08 2007 12:00 PM | PERMALINK

Victoria's Double Flame Earrings with Amethyst and Topaz Beads

I am probably the only jeweler on earth who knows almost nothing about beading! For me, beading is all about adding a little sparkle to my otherwise all-metal jewels, as in the earrings above. So although I use some of the techniques that Adam showed in our metalchik how-to this week, I was excited to learn more about the fundamentals!

Adam did such a great job explaining everything that I feel that I only need add a couple...

  • Mad Metal Chain on the Cheap

POSTED BY TAMMY POWLEY, OCTOBER 03 2007 08:00 AM | PERMALINK

In video episode number 4, Victoria brought us on a virtual shopping trip to Metalliferous. Along with some cool tools, she showed us the yards and yards of chain you can bug there by the foot. I love working with chain. It's a super easy way to make jewelry, and today, the whole "link look" is really popular.

If you've been thinking of branching out into chain but aren't ready to make a huge investment yet, one option is your local craft store. You'd be amazed at how many jewelry...

  • Tool Time with Metalchik

POSTED BY VICTORIA TILLOTSON, SEPTEMBER 17 2007 12:12 PM | PERMALINK

Sterling and 18K Gold Ring with Tourmalated Quartz

    Tools, glorious tools!

What wouldn’t we give for those extra bit more? That’s all we jewelers live for! Why should we be fated to do nothing but brood on tools, magical tools, wonderful tools, marvellous tools, fabulous
    tools!!!

So much for my Metalchik ode to Oliver Twist. Seriously, tools are the most important, and most debated, aspect of any jewelry making. So dizzyingly diverse is the array of jewelry tools that it’s enough...
